Paraeducator Generalist Certification Course (Course #15428)

For school superintendents requiring their Paraeducators to have their Paraeducator Generalist Certification, we are offering two trainings during the 2016-17 school year.  Each Paraeducator  needing certification will register only once.

  • Each course starts with a three-hour face-to-face required orientation session from 4:30 – 7:30 PM.  Participants will choose only one session to attend.

Orientation Session 1
Cedar Falls:  Section # 29560 is on 8/31/16 and is in room C
Clear Lake:  Section # 29558 is on 8/30/16 and is in room D
Marshalltown:  Section # 29559 is on 9/1/16 and is in room G

Orientation Session 2

Clear Lake:   Section # 29563 is on 1/5/17 in room D    (Snow Date of 1/11/17)
Marshalltown:   Section # 29562 is on 1/4/17 in room G    (Snow Date of 1/10/17)

  • Paraeducators starting in August/ September will be completed by mid-December and those starting in January will be completed by mid-April.  Training continues to be a self-paced primarily online program. In a little over 3 months participants will complete a three-hour face-to-face orientation session, complete the online training, and the rest of the program requirements as outlined on the night of the Orientation Session.
  • Registration for the certification course will cost $225 per participant, and participants must register through the AEA 267 Professional Learning system. (All registrations must be paid for by debit/credit card or purchase order.)
  • Once the AEA 267 course is completed, the paraeducator applies to the Board of Educational Examiners (BoEE) for the certification. The cost to apply to the BoEE is $40. The BoEE also requires an FBI background check, which is an additional $75 fee. (A local background check by the school district does not apply.)  This is $115 beyond the course fee.
  • AEA 267 does not offer its Paraeducator Generalist Course in the summer.  However, the program is offered at other post-secondary institutions.  To access that information, please log onto our Paraeducator website   https://www.aea267.k12.ia.us/paraeducators

Interested participants will need to contact the post-secondary institutions directly to inquire about their program requirements.

Paraeducator Recertification
The Paraeducator certification lasts for 5 years, during which time the Paraeducator must complete three credits in order to renew the certificate.  One unit of credit equals 15 hours of seat time in a college level course or course from an Area Education Agency (AEA) which are designated as Paraeducator credit, licensure renewal credit or graduate credit.  Workshops and CEUs cannot be offered as Paraeducator credit, or counted toward renewal credit of the Paraeducator Certificate.  Credit courses may be taken through an AEA or through an organization/college/university/ that is accredited by the state of Iowa.  Paraeducators can also choose to take coursework applicable to their position through the Statewide AEA PD Online Learning System that can be found at:

Those paraeducators obtaining their Early Childhood Area of Endorsement after receiving their Generalist Certification can use those three credits to renew their Generalist Certification.
